Types of Headaches Physio’s Treat

Headaches and Physiotherapy

Have you ever wondered what types of headaches physiotherapy can help with?

Physiotherapists can treat various types of headaches that are related to musculoskeletal and postural issues. Here are some of the types of headaches that a physiotherapist may treat:

  • Tension Headaches:

Physiotherapists can help treat tension headaches that are caused by muscle tension and poor posture. They may use techniques such as soft tissue release including massage, hold-relax stretching, acupuncture/Dry Needling, and exercises to help relieve muscle tension and improve posture.

  • Cervicogenic Headaches:

These are headaches that are caused by problems in the neck, such as muscle tension, joint dysfunction, or disc problems. Physiotherapists can use manual therapy techniques, such as mobilization and manipulation, to help relieve pain and improve function in the neck. Combined with education and modalities to provide maximum benefit for the patient.

  • Post-concussion Headaches:

Physiotherapists can work with patients who are experiencing headaches as a result of a concussion or other head injury. They may use exercise, manual therapy, and other techniques to help improve symptoms and promote recovery.

  • Migraines:

While physiotherapists cannot cure migraines, they may be able to help reduce the frequency and severity of migraines by addressing underlying musculoskeletal issues, such as neck stiffness and tension.

It is important to note that if you are experiencing severe or frequent headaches, you should always consult with a medical professional to determine the cause and appropriate treatment that should be provided.

If you have any questions and would like to discuss treatment options with a physiotherapist our office offers a free phone consultation. Please see the available appointments on the Book Now page.
