Hip Osteoarthritis

Our hip joint is made up of the pelvis and femur bone (thigh bone). It is considered a ball & socket type of joint. The ball is made up of the femur head and the socket is part of the pelvis bone. There is cartilage on both surfaces of the joint, which protects and cushions the bones and lets them move easily.

In Hip Osteoarthritis, over time the cartilage between joints wears away and protective joint space between two bones decreases. Eventually, the friction between bone surfaces gets started by rubbing out. In some cases, in the absence of the cartilage, the bone starts to grow outwards and forms bony spurs which are also known as osteophytes. This condition takes a long time to develop and worsens over time.

Risk Factors for Osteoarthritis...

There are certain factors that act together for developing hip osteoarthritis.

Some of them are:

  • Increasing age

  • Obesity

  • Family history

  • Past history of injury at hip

  • Playing high-impact sports like football, hockey, wrestling and

  • Congenital defects (By Birth)

Presentation of this condition

Presentation of pain is progressive pain in the groin and hip radiating towards thighs and knees, stiffness in hips after prolonged rest and in the morning especially, grinding noise in the hip with reduced movements which restricts normal walking pattern, and higher pain in rainy weather.
