Radial Shockwave Therapy for Chronic Pain

Radial Shockwave Therapy in Barrie at Integrative Physiotherapy

Radial shockwave therapy (RSWT) is a non-invasive, evidence-based treatment that uses acoustic pressure waves to stimulate healing in soft tissues, tendons, and bones. At IPW, we integrate radial shockwave into our rehabilitation programs to help reduce pain, promote tissue regeneration, and restore function.

Why Choose Radial Shockwave Therapy?

  • Accelerated Healing
The pressure waves increase blood flow and metabolic activity in the targeted tissue, which can speed up healing processes.

  • Pain Reduction
Radial shockwave can reduce pain by desensitizing nerve endings and altering pain signalling in chronic conditions.

  • Non-Surgical Option
It offers a viable alternative to surgery for many tendon and musculoskeletal disorders, with minimal downtime.

  • Versatile Applications
Effective for conditions such as tendinopathies (e.g. Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis), lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow), rotator cuff issues, and more.

Conditions We Treat with Radial Shockwave

  • Plantar fasciitis & heel pain

  • Achilles tendinopathy

  • Patellar tendinopathy (jumper’s knee)

  • Lateral and medial epicondylitis (elbow tendon issues)

  • Rotator cuff tendon injuries

  • Iliotibial band syndrome

  • Calcific tendinitis

  • Greater trochanteric pain syndrome (hip)

  • Chronic musculoskeletal pain not responding sufficiently to conventional therapies

What to Expect: Treatment Process

1. Comprehensive Assessment

Your clinician will begin with a full physiotherapy evaluation: medical history, clinical tests, and imaging review if available. This helps identify the tissue(s) involved, severity, and any contributing factors (e.g. biomechanical imbalances, movement patterns).

2. Treatment Plan & Goal Setting

Based on the assessment, we design a customized plan. We decide the number of sessions, intensity settings, and pairing with adjunct therapies (e.g. manual therapy, exercise, stretching).

3. Radial Shockwave Session

Each session typically lasts 10–15 minutes. The probe is applied to the skin overlying the injured tissue, sometimes with coupling gel, and pulses are delivered in sets. You may feel mild to moderate pressure during treatment.

4. Post-Treatment Guidance

After a shockwave, we may incorporate stretching, strengthening exercises, soft tissue mobilization, or activity modification. You’ll also be advised on what to expect (e.g. temporary soreness) and how to manage it.

5. Monitoring & Progression

We track your pain, function, and tissue response across sessions. If needed, we adjust treatment parameters or combine with other modalities to ensure optimal progress.

Benefits of Radial Shockwave Therapy

  • Stimulates new blood vessel formation (neovascularization)

  • Breaks down calcifications in tissues when present

  • Accelerates fibrinolysis and tissue remodelling

  • Encourages the release of growth factors and regenerative processes

  • Minimal side effects and low risk

  • Quick treatments with little to no recovery downtime

Who Is a Good Candidate?

RSWT is ideal for people who:

  • Have chronic tendon pain (> 3 months) not improving with conventional treatments

  • Want to avoid or delay surgery

  • They are generally healthy (no uncontrolled bleeding disorders, infections, or malignancies in the region)

  • Understand that results may take several sessions and gradual improvement

What is Radial Shockwave Therapy, and how can it help with chronic pain.

The Initial Assessment

Before we start your Shockwave sessions, we start with a 45-minute physiotherapy assessment to identify the areas that need to be addressed — whether that’s an injury or to improve your overall mobility.

Then, we develop a program tailored to your specific needs.

30-Minute Pilates Session

These shockwave therapy sessions focus on targeting specific areas of pain or injury to help you achieve your recovery goals. A 30-minute session is recommended for those with multiple areas of concern or more complex conditions.

You may also be provided with follow-up exercises and guidance so you can continue your treatment plan and support the benefits of shockwave therapy outside of our clinic!
